Acne spot care

Leave-on benzoyl peroxide gels or creams, and small hydrocolloid patches, that you put on single pimples instead of the whole face.

Why it helps

Benzoyl peroxide reduces acne bacteria and inflammation and helps unclog pores. Hydrocolloid patches soak up fluid from a pimple that is already open or draining, keep it clean, and stop you from picking, which lowers the chance of dark marks.

Look for

  • Benzoyl peroxide in a low to moderate strength (2.5% to 5% is often enough)
  • Fragrance-free gel or cream you can dab on
  • Hydrocolloid patches that are thin and skin-toned or clear
  • Patch size that fits one pimple
  • Non-comedogenic wording

Avoid

  • Toothpaste, lemon juice, or other home remedies on pimples
  • Patches on skin that is broken from picking and looks infected
  • Using spot treatments to replace a routine when acne is widespread

Caution

Benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels, pillowcases, and clothes, and it can dry or irritate skin, so let it dry fully and test a small area first.

Worth asking a clinician about

If pimples are deep, painful, scarring, or keep coming back, a clinician can offer prescription treatments that work on the whole face, not just single spots.
