Anti-chafe balms and sticks

A waxy or silicone-based balm, stick, or gel that you glide onto skin before activity. It leaves a slippery layer so skin rubs less on skin or fabric.

Why it helps

Chafing comes from repeated rubbing, often made worse by sweat and heat. A slick layer cuts the friction on thighs, underarms, under bras and waistbands, and nipples, so skin stays smoother and less raw.

Look for

  • Stick or balm form that is easy to apply without a mess
  • Fragrance-free and dye-free
  • Silicone, petrolatum, or plant-wax base that stays put when you sweat
  • Sweat-resistant wording for long workouts or hot days
  • Small size you can carry in a gym bag

Avoid

  • Heavily scented or menthol products on skin that is already raw
  • Thick layers over open, weeping, or broken skin
  • Using it as a substitute for a dry, clean start

Caution

Apply to clean, dry skin that is not broken, and stop and get checked if skin is open, oozing, or has a red rash that keeps spreading.

Worth asking a clinician about

If chafing keeps coming back or the folds stay red, wet, or smelly, ask about intertrigo, since a yeast or bacterial infection may need treatment.
