Skin-friendly bedding

Breathable sheets and pillowcases that you wash often, with optional dust-mite covers on the mattress and pillows.

Why it helps

You spend about a third of your life against your bedding. Soft, breathable fabric that is washed regularly keeps sweat, oil and buildup off your skin and can reduce overnight itch and heat. Dust-mite covers may help people who are allergic to dust mites, but the evidence for eczema is mixed.

Look for

  • Breathable, soft fabrics such as cotton, bamboo-type viscose, linen or a smooth weave
  • Sheets and pillowcases you can wash hot enough to match the care label
  • Fragrance-free, dye-free washing (see the laundry category)
  • Zippered dust-mite covers if you know you are allergic to dust mites
  • Lightweight layers so you can adjust to stay cool

Avoid

  • Rough, scratchy or heavily treated fabrics
  • Scented sprays on bedding
  • Heavy, warm bedding that makes you sweat

Caution

Dust-mite covers are not proven to improve eczema, so treat them as optional, and ask about allergy testing if you think dust mites are a trigger.

Worth asking a clinician about

If you suspect dust mites or other allergens are a trigger, ask whether allergy testing makes sense for you.
