Breathable footwear

Shoes and sandals made with airy uppers such as mesh or leather and enough room for the toes, so feet can release heat and sweat.

Why it helps

Air flow keeps feet drier, and a roomy fit reduces rubbing and pressure. Dry, comfortable feet are less likely to get sore, smelly, or fungal.

Look for

  • Mesh or other breathable upper
  • Room in the toe box
  • Removable, washable insoles
  • Open styles like sandals when appropriate
  • A pair you can rotate so shoes dry out between days

Avoid

  • Plastic or rubber shoes worn all day
  • Shoes that are tight across the toes
  • Wearing the same pair every day

Worth asking a clinician about

For lasting foot rashes, thick or discolored nails, or painful sore spots, ask a clinician to examine them.
