Gentle chemical exfoliant

A leave-on lotion, gel, or pad with an acid such as salicylic acid (BHA) or glycolic or lactic acid (AHA) that loosens dead skin cells instead of scrubbing them off.

Why it helps

Salicylic acid goes into oily pores and helps clear blackheads and whiteheads. AHAs smooth rough, dull skin and can soften small bumps and uneven texture. Both are gentler than grainy scrubs when used lightly.

Look for

  • Salicylic acid for oily or clogged-pore skin
  • Lactic acid for a milder AHA option
  • Glycolic acid for smoother texture on tougher skin
  • Fragrance-free formulas with a lower strength
  • Hydrating ingredients like glycerin in the same product

Avoid

  • Grainy scrubs or brushes at the same time
  • Using on sunburned, cracked, or irritated skin
  • Mixing with a retinoid or other acid in the same session

Caution

Acids make skin more sun-sensitive and can sting or peel, and salicylic acid can be absorbed through skin, so check with a clinician before using it widely if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
