Hair camouflage

Cosmetic ways to cover thinning or missing hair: wigs and hair pieces, hair fibers, scalp concealers and sprays, and scarves or head wraps.

Why it helps

These do not regrow hair, but they can make hair loss less visible and help people feel more like themselves. Many are easy to try, reversible, and useful while a treatment has time to work.

Look for

  • Wig caps that are breathable, soft, and seamless inside, with adjustable straps instead of tight bands
  • Hair fibers or scalp concealers in a shade matched to your hair color
  • Soft cotton, bamboo, or jersey scarves and wraps
  • Wigs or toppers sized to fit without pulling on the edges of your hair
  • Products that wash out easily with a mild shampoo

Avoid

  • Strong adhesives or tapes on a sore, red, or flaking scalp
  • Tight clips, combs, or glue that pull on fragile hair
  • Wearing a wig all day and night without letting the scalp breathe

Caution

Adhesives, dyes, and some fiber or spray ingredients can irritate the scalp or cause an allergic reaction, so patch test on the inner forearm or behind the ear for a couple of days first.

Worth asking a clinician about

If hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with scalp pain, redness, or scarring, ask a dermatologist about the cause before relying on camouflage alone.
