Room humidifier

A device that adds moisture to indoor air, usually in the bedroom, during dry seasons or in air-conditioned or heated rooms.

Why it helps

Very dry air pulls water out of the skin, so adding some moisture to the room can make dry, itchy skin feel more comfortable, especially overnight. It works best alongside a good moisturizer, not instead of one.

Look for

  • A model with a removable tank that is easy to clean
  • A built-in humidity gauge, or buy a small separate one
  • Cool-mist models if children or pets are around
  • An automatic shut-off when the tank is empty
  • Filters or parts that are simple to replace

Avoid

  • Letting humidity stay above about 50 percent
  • Leaving water sitting in the tank for days
  • Using essential oils in the water

Caution

Clean it often and use distilled water if your water is hard, because dirty humidifiers can grow mold and bacteria, and too much humidity can encourage dust mites and mold.
