Mineral sunscreen

A sunscreen whose active ingredients are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both. These sit on top of the skin and block and scatter UV light.

Why it helps

Protects against sunburn, early skin aging, and skin cancer risk. Tends to be gentle, so it is a common pick for sensitive or easily irritated skin and for children.

Look for

  • Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the only active ingredients
  • Broad spectrum on the label
  • SPF 30 or higher
  • Water resistant (40 or 80 minutes) if you will sweat or swim
  • Fragrance-free if your skin is reactive

Avoid

  • Products without a broad spectrum label
  • Sprays or powders you may breathe in; a cream or lotion is easier to apply evenly

Caution

Sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months; use shade and clothing instead and ask their doctor.
