Nickel-free jewelry
Earrings, watches, necklaces and other metal items made from metals that do not release nickel, or coated to block it.
Why it helps
Nickel is one of the most common causes of allergic skin rashes. Choosing nickel-free metals prevents the red, itchy, sometimes blistering rash that shows up under earrings, watch backs, belt buckles and snaps.
Look for
- Surgical-grade stainless steel (check that it is labeled low or no nickel release)
- Solid gold of 14 karat or higher, or pure silver
- Titanium or niobium for pierced ears
- Plastic, coated or painted metal for buttons, snaps and watch backs
- Labels that say nickel-free, which is stronger than just "hypoallergenic"
Avoid
- Cheap costume jewelry with no metal listed
- White gold and low-karat gold, which can contain nickel
- Wearing items that have caused a rash before
Caution
Nickel allergy does not go away, so once you react the safest plan is to avoid contact, and a patch test from a clinician can confirm it.
Worth asking a clinician about
If you get a repeat rash where metal touches your skin, ask about patch testing to confirm a nickel allergy.
