Shaving and razor care

Tools and products that make shaving gentler: a sharp razor or electric trimmer, a cushioning shave gel or cream, and a soothing after-shave moisturizer.

Why it helps

Shaving close can push cut hairs back into the skin, especially curly or coarse hair, which causes razor bumps. Cutting hair a little less close, shaving with the grain, and using a clean, sharp blade with plenty of lubrication cut down on bumps, nicks, and irritation.

Look for

  • Electric trimmer or razor with an adjustable guard that leaves hair slightly long
  • Single or double blade razors with sharp, fresh blades
  • Fragrance-free shave gel or cream that lets the blade glide
  • Alcohol-free after-shave balm or plain moisturizer
  • A soft cloth or soft brush for gentle prep

Avoid

  • Stretching skin tight and going over the same spot repeatedly
  • Dull blades or sharing razors
  • Alcohol-heavy or heavily scented after-shaves

Caution

If bumps are painful, pus-filled, or keep coming back, a clinician can help, since changing the shaving method or hair removal approach may be needed.

Worth asking a clinician about

Laser hair removal, prescription creams, or other options are worth asking about for razor bumps that keep returning.
