Shower shoes and water socks for public wet areas
Waterproof flip-flops, slide sandals, water shoes, or thin water socks you wear in locker rooms, pool decks, and gym or hotel showers. They keep your bare feet off warm, wet floors that many people walk on.
Why it helps
Fungi that cause athlete's foot and nail fungus, and the virus behind common warts, can live on damp shared floors. A barrier between your skin and the floor lowers your chance of picking them up.
Look for
- Quick-drying, waterproof material such as rubber, foam, or neoprene
- Textured sole for grip on wet tile
- Straps or a snug fit that hold well and do not rub the toes
- Easy to rinse and air dry after each use
- A pair kept just for public wet areas
- Water socks or water shoes if you want full coverage of the foot at pools
Avoid
- Going barefoot in shared showers and locker rooms
- Sharing shoes or towels
- Storing damp sandals in a closed bag
Caution
Shower shoes help but do not replace the basic habits of washing your feet, drying well between the toes, and not sharing towels.
