SPF lip balm

A lip balm that contains sunscreen. It protects lips, which are often skipped when people apply sunscreen.

Why it helps

Lips get sun like any other skin but have little natural protection. A lip balm with SPF helps prevent sunburned lips and lowers the chance of sun damage that can lead to lip skin cancer.

Look for

  • SPF 30 or higher
  • Broad spectrum on the label
  • Water resistant (40 or 80 minutes) if you swim or sweat
  • Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide if you prefer mineral filters
  • A fragrance-free or flavor-free option if lips get irritated

Avoid

  • Balms with no SPF listed
  • Strong menthol, camphor, or cinnamon flavors if your lips sting or peel

Caution

Reapply often, since lips lose product quickly from eating, drinking, and licking.

Worth asking a clinician about

A lip spot that is scaly, rough, or does not heal should be checked by a dermatologist.
