Sport sunscreen (sweat and water resistant)

A broad-spectrum sunscreen made to stay on during sweating or swimming. It is usually a body lotion, stick, or sturdy formula labeled water resistant for 40 or 80 minutes.

Why it helps

Sweat and water wash off regular sunscreen quickly. A water-resistant formula keeps protection going longer during exercise and water play, as long as you reapply on time.

Look for

  • Water resistant, with 40 or 80 minutes stated on the label (80 lasts longer)
  • Broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher
  • A formula that does not sting when it runs into eyes (sticks and mineral options help)
  • Lotion or stick that you can apply evenly and thickly
  • Fragrance-free if you sweat a lot and get rashes

Avoid

  • Any claim of 'waterproof' or 'sweatproof'; the FDA does not allow these claims, and all sunscreens wash off eventually
  • Relying on a spray without rubbing it in; coverage is often thin and uneven

Caution

Reapply at least every 2 hours, and right after swimming, sweating, or toweling off, no matter what the label says.
