Tinted sunscreen (iron oxides)

A sunscreen with a skin-tone tint made from iron oxides. The tint helps block visible light on top of UV, and it blends away the white cast many mineral sunscreens leave.

Why it helps

Visible light can darken melasma and dark marks, especially on medium to deeper skin tones. In one randomized study of women with melasma, a sunscreen with iron oxides improved skin tone evenness more than the same sunscreen without a tint.

Look for

  • Iron oxides listed in the ingredients
  • Broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher
  • A shade close to your skin tone, tested in daylight
  • Water resistant if you sweat
  • Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide if you want a mineral formula

Avoid

  • Assuming any makeup with a tint works; protection comes from the sunscreen amount and the iron oxides, so check the label

Caution

Tint can rub off on collars and pillowcases; wash them as usual.

Worth asking a clinician about

Melasma often needs more than sunscreen; a dermatologist can discuss prescription options.
