Sun-protective gear (UPF clothing, hats, sunglasses)

Clothing and accessories that block the sun so you rely less on sunscreen: UPF-rated shirts and pants, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Why it helps

Covering skin gives steady protection that does not wash off or need reapplying. A wide-brimmed hat shades the face, ears, and neck, and good sunglasses protect the eyes and the thin skin around them.

Look for

  • A UPF 30 or higher label, with UPF 50+ for the strongest cover
  • Tightly woven, darker or brighter fabrics
  • A hat brim that goes all the way around (about 3 inches or wider)
  • Sunglasses labeled as blocking 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB (or UV400)
  • Long sleeves and pants in light, breathable fabric for heat

Avoid

  • Thin, loose-weave, or light white cotton as your only cover; it can let a lot of UV through, especially when wet
  • Baseball caps alone, which leave ears and neck open

Caution

Gear covers only what it covers; use sunscreen on skin that stays exposed.
